Barbie( A little bit of History.)

Everyone knows Barbie. Barbie has been around since I can remember and probably a lot longer then that. Every little girl wanted a Barbie or wanted to be Barbie which wasn’t always a good thing, even resulting in a physiological term deemed the Barbie Syndrome. But Barbie as a brand has certainly come a long way and diversified to include all types of colours, shapes and sizes. So how and where did Barbie come from? Well it was launched in March 1959 by the American toy-company Mattel, Inc. Initially they weren’t impressed by the idea or a adult bodied doll. Ruth Handler creator, was inspired whilst watching  her daughter Barbara play with paper dolls. She noticed that her daughter often enjoyed giving them adult roles. At the time, most children’s toy dolls were representations of infants so Ruth thought that there could be a gap in the market. Initially her idea was not welcomed with enthusiasm. On a trip to Germany however she stumbled upon a similar Doll to the one she had envisioned. Bild Lilli was a Adult doll based on a popular German comic strip and became the inspiration for the doll that changed the world. Barbie named Ironically after Ruth’s Daughter Barbara.

Barbie is the figurehead of a brand of Mattel dolls and accessories, including other family members and collectible dolls. Barbie has been an important part of the toy fashion doll market for over fifty years, and has been the subject of numerous controversies and lawsuits, often involving parody of the doll and her lifestyle.
